Head and the Heart

Friday night, my lovely companion and I made plans to see the $3 Head and the Heart show at the Prospect Park bandshell. The weather had cleared up nicely after the week full of random thunderstorms and 90% humidity, and while it was still a little warm, we made ourselves comfortable on the hill behind the seats using the GooglePlus blanket we picked up at a previous concert.

I'd never heard of the opening band before, but Lost in the Trees had a nice dark musical sound with a lead singer who sounded like Damian Rice. The melody built to a crescendo and the violin player energetically finished a note by thrusting her bow into the air like Conan, triumphant over the hordes.

And then a few notes later she did it again. And pretty much spent the rest of the set showing exactly how amazing a violinist she was while outperforming her bandmates like crazy. It was impressive. And not at all annoying.

The Head and the Heart was amazing. A highlight was Rivers and Roads, where Charity Rose Thielen amazed us by really belting out the lyrics. Huge voice on that little lady. Just wow. During the encore set, Josiah Johnson's solo version of Honey Come Home was a painfully beautiful rendition of a song that felt very close to home. The last song brought the whole band back out for Down in the Valley which ended with everyone standing and stomping and clapping.

It turned out to be an altogether beautiful night. I remember remarking how wonderful it is to live such a short walk from such an amazing park. We'll be going back to see a few more concerts in the Celebrate Brooklyn series before the season is out.
